DEATH BEATS
FREEDOM CALL

DES MOINES, Nov. 14--Gov. Herschel Loveless commuted the sentence of a life term prisoner this afternoon so that the inmate could be released tomorrow only to find later that the man died last night.

The State Parole Board identified the prisoner as Mose Simpson, 59, of Kellogg, Iowa. He had served 10 years for first degree murder in the slaying of Richard Mulbrook in a street argument at Kellogg Aug. 22, 1947.

Board Secretary Russell Bobzin said Simpson was suffering from inoperable cancer. The board had recommended the commutation so Simpson could spend his last days with his family.

When Bobzin called Fort Madison State Penitentiary to arrange Simpson's release, he was told of the prisoner's death.
