Indianiola, Iowa

Mary Sue Fickel, 59, of Indianola passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015. She was born January 5, 1956 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Alfred Earl and Mary Helen (Billingsley) Fickel, lived in Fairfield, Iowa for two years then moved to Indianola, Iowa.

Mary Sue received her education through Winifred Law Opportunity Center in Indianola. She moved to Handicap Village in Clear Lake and Mason City where she lived in the group home and in an apartment with assistance from 1973-1994. She returned to Indianola and lived in an apartment with assistance from Christian Opportunity Center until she moved into one of their group homes in 2012. Mary Sue loved her family, her staff, her housemates, her friends, her church, her house dog, Benji, music, dancing, coloring, bowling, shooting baskets, hot air balloons, doing laundry and cleaning the house. She participated in a variety of activities in the Special Olympics and competed in Rhythmic Ribbon Dancing at the 1991 Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mary Sue is survived by two sisters, Marilyn Korseberg (Washburn, WI) and Dorothy (Melvin) Crawford (Ft. Worth, TX); two sister-in-laws, Shirley Fickel (Ralph) Hoag (Muscatine, IA) and Esther Fickel (Washington, IA); one brother-in-law, Larry (Sue) Ranard (Ottumwa, IA); eight nieces and nephews, Monna (Marvin) Ohme (Rockford, IL), Wesley (Sue) Ranard (Newton, IA), Marlis (Gale) Gilbert (Ankeny, IA), Herbert (Vicki) Fickel (Moline, IL), Gifford (Estella) Fickel (Peoria, IL), Christine (Tom) Gaber (Washburn, WI), Janet (Brent) Dunbar (Gatesville, TX), and David (Julie) Crawford (Ft. Worth, TX) and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Robert Fickel and Donald Fickel and one sister, Lola Belle Ranard.

Visitation will be held at the Indianola First United Methodist Church at 307 W. Ashland Avenue, Indianola, Iowa at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3rd with a funeral service following at 11 a.m. at the church. A graveside committal service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Glasgow Cemetery, Glasgow, Iowa, southeast of Fairfield.
