Former Baxter Woman killed

A former Baxter woman who was allegedly taking part in a theft was killed in a spectacular collision with a semi Tuesday.

Barbara Stoner, 30, of Des Moines, a native of Baxter, was killed when the S-10 pick-up she was in was broadsided by a semi truck. Stoner and Lawrence Cooley, 24, also of Des Moines, were fleeing Polk County Sheriff’s officials after allegedly stealing a $896 riding lawn mower from Ankeny Wal-Mart.

The two Des Moines residents were leading law enforcement officials on a chase involving speeds of up to 70 mph through Des Moines and the suburb of Pleasant Hill. The chase ended at Northeast 56th Street and Iowa Highway 163 in Pleasant Hill when the Chevy truck ran a red light and was struck broadside by a semi-tractor.

The violent crash killed Cooley at the scene. Stoner died a few hours later at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Thurs 31 July 1997.
