Elsie Dalasta Lathrum was born July 15, 1918 to Aristo "Harry" and Ines (Bigliardi) Dalasta, and passed away January 10 in Newton. She attended schools in Bondurant, Berwick (Yoder School) and graduated from Ankeny High School in 1935. She married Bernal Gibbs Lathrum on August 28, 1937 and to this union five children were born: Donna, Mary, Nancy, Barbara and Alan.

Elsie was a softball pitcher during her high school years and also took high honors in the county Spelling Bees. She and Bernal were avid bowlers and volunteered at Special Olympics bowling tournaments. Elsie also volunteered at local libraries. Music, laughter, and knowledge were her passions; but she was devoted to her family. She was a champion at word games, math games, was a whiz at finding 4-leaf clovers, and loved to travel.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; best friend and husband of 63 years, Bernal; one daughter, Mary Ann; a great-granddaughter, Ellen Carpenter; two brothers, Dan Dalasta and Fred Dalasta; and two sisters, Mary Pieracci and Martha Rush.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her son, Alan (Shirley) of Yale; three daughters: Donna Pardun of Minburn, Nancy (David) Hanna of Boone and Barbara (John) Friederich of Monroe; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Derio (Dorothy) Dalasta of Lewiston, ID; and many special nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will begin at 3 p.m., Thursday, January 12 at Merle Hay Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 2. Memorial contributions may be given in her honor to Newton Village special building fund, Willowbrook Adult Day Center, or Skiff Hospital Monarch (Hospice) Wing. ~ The Des Moines Register Legacy, Des Moines, Iowa 12 Jan 2012.
