Hugh Byal, 89, of Mingo died of cancer Tuesday at Mill-Pond Health Care Center in Ankeny. The body was cremated, and memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Mingo United Methodist Church. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date.
Mr. Byal had lived in the Mingo area all his life. He was a farmer and cofounder of Byal Apple Orchards. He had served in the Navy Reserves and was an amateur radio operator. He was a member of American Radio Relay League, Amateur Radio Association and Mingo Men’s Club. A portion of Byal Apple Orchards was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 because of the orchard’s contributions to the development of modern orchard practices.
He is survived by his wife, Ella; a daughter, Sandra Freeland of Ankeny; a son, Wayne of Mingo; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mingo United Methodist Church. Cremation Society of Iowa is handling arrangements.
