Man Dies in Traffic Accident

COLFAX - A rural Colfax man died from injuries suffered in a two-car crash Monday afternoon southeast of Colfax at a gravel interchange.

Robert Lee Lourens, 60, died when the 1993 Chevy S10 pickup he was driving ran a stop sign and was struck by a 1992 Chevy Blazer driven by Merlinda Renee Wiggins, 34, of rural Mitchellville.

Lourens was southbound on West 108th Street South, while Wiggins was headed west on South 60th Avenue West.

Lourens was transported to Skiff Medical Center in Newton by Colfax Fire and Rescue where he died from the injuries at 5:42 p.m. Wiggins was taken to Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines by Prairie City Fire and Rescue. She was treated and released.

Weather played no part in the accident and there were no charges. Damage to Louren's pickup was estimated at $10,000, while damages to Wiggins' Blazer was estimated at $7,000. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Tues 4 Jan 2000.
