Sherman Wayne Van Zee, age 57 of Prairie City, died Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at First Reformed Church in Prairie City, Iowa. The family will greet friends following the service at a luncheon in the church fellowship hall. A private family burial will take place at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First Reformed Church or the Christian Conference Center and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The son of Marion and Alma (Gabelmann) Van Zee, Sherman was born on April 30, 1956, in Des Moines. He graduated from Prairie City High School and received his degree in Elementary Education from Central College. Sherman worked as a travel agent for several years and also worked as a tour guide. He had a deep love for music and played the piano, organ and trombone as well as singing in many choirs. Sherman was involved with the Newton Community Theater and had a passion for his family history.

Those left to honor his memory include his father, Marion; a sister, Mary (Robert) Crowley of Pueblo, Colorado and a brother, John (Kathy Van Zee) of Mitchellville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alma in January of 2013. ~ The Coburn Funeral Home, Colfax, Iowa 17 Sept 2013.
