Mrs. Sarah J. West died last Sunday morning at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Blanche Phillips, 1015 Pleasant street, Des Moines. She had been ill for a long time and a visit to the Pacific coast with her daughter, Mrs. Virgie Coolidge, from which she returned three months ago, rather aggravated than improved her disease, and for two weeks previous to her death her decline was rapid. The funeral services were last Tuesday from her daughter's residence, conducted by Rev'ds Sooy and Barnitz. J.T. West and daughter, Postmistress Adella V. Weaver, and Mrs. Belle Kennedy, of Colfax, and Richard Price and wife, of Winterset, were among the mourners.

Mrs. Sarah West was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and was 63 years of age. In 1860 she married W.L. West, they came to Iowa, and finally located in Colfax. Here Mr. West was first associated in mercantile business with J.M. Kennedy; subsequently J.F. Weaver bought out Kennedy's interest and for years the firm name West & Weaver was known throughout the country. In 1882 following the dissolution and retirement from business of the firm, Mr. West removed with his family to Des Moines, and died there in April 1883.

Four children, the fruits of this union, survive the loss of a loved and loving mother; they are Mrs. Virg. Coolidge, Eugene, Oregon; Miss Cad West, Mrs. T.W. Phillips and Mr. Cliff West, Des Moines. Mrs. West was a noble woman whose memory is revered and her loss mourned by every old citizen of this place.

Note: there is a D.W.Coolidge in Delaware County, but no Virginia! Not even in Oregon! Remarried?
