Jeanette R. Smith, 64, of Colfax, died Saturday, September 28, 2002 in her home. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 2 at The Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax with Pastor Matt Stuva officiating. Burial was at the Colfax cemetery. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County.

Jeanette was a daughter of Ervin and Shirley (Groom) Arlt born on January 27, 1938 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. She attended school in Newton and moved to Colfax in 1958. She was united in marriage to her Harold Arthur “Babe” Smith on April 24, 1958 in Aurora, Colorado.

She retired from Maytag in receiving and also at Prairie Meadows as a hostess. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Newton and enjoyed bowling and was a well-known and accomplished artist.

She is survived by four sons and daughters in law, Mark Kevin and Heidi, Randy Gene and Michelle, Steven Ray and Margaret, and Tracy Dean and Becky, all of Colfax; 12 grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Des Moines Duane Keith and Darlene Arlt of Anaheim, California; one sister and brother-in-law, Gloria Sharon and James Steward of Moline, Illinois; one step-sister and step-brother-in-law, Linda and Jerry Bingar of Newton; step-mother Gladys Arlt of Newton; a very special companion, Jerry Vernon Wilcox of Colfax; and many nieces, nephews, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law and beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1991, and a sister, Darla. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa Thurs 30 Oct 2002.
