Howard R. Trease, 94, of Kellogg died on Monday, May 13, 2013, at Park Centre in Newton.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Kellogg Fire Department, Ladies Cemetery Association, Park Centre Christmas Fund or the Kellogg Historical Society may be left at the funeral home.

Howard, the son of Charles and Pearl (Hartfield) Trease, was born on Oct. 25, 1918, in Rock Creek Township. At age 16, he began a 43-year career at the Rock Island Railroad. Howard served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Howard was united in marriage with Mary Shafer on Aug. 9, 1941, in Unionville, Mo. Howard and Mary made their home in Kellogg, where he was a member of the Kellogg VFW. Howard enjoyed traveling, bluegrass music, rodeos, mushroom hunting and dirt track racing. He also was dedicated to his family and loved spending time with them, especially every year on Christmas Eve, when the entire family gathered at Howard’s house.

Those left to honor Howard’s memory are his children, Ima (Dwight) Rawlins of Kellogg, Dave (June) Trease of Kellogg, Thel (Al) Sneller of Newton and Jackie (Al) Avila of Overland Park, Kan.; his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bertha See of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; two sons, Charles and Max Trease; and a sister, Faye Bryan. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Wed 15 May 2013.
