Virgil M. Hesse Sr., 50, of Newton died of cancer Monday at home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, with burial at Newton Union Cemetery.

Mr. Hesse was born in Des Arc, Ark., and lived in Arkansas before moving to Newton in 1951. He was a retired machine operator and inspector with Maytag Corp.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; three sons, Virgil Jr. and Michael, both of Newton, and Sam of Collins; three brothers, Joe and Pete, both of Newton, and David of Seymour; two sisters, Betty Reavis of Newton and Mary Northern of Claredon, Ark.; and three grandchildren.

Friends may call after noon today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. ~ Unknown paper, Thursday, May 17, 2001
