Gertrude 'Gertie' Holtsclaw, 86, of Newton, formerly of Baxter, died Monday, Nov. 8, at Heritage Manor in Newton.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Rollin Watters officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Boyd-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in Baxter. Memorials in Mrs. Holtsclaw's name will be accepted.

The daughter of Charles and Rosa (Williams) Golden, she was born Oct. 10, 1913, in Sheldon, Mo. and was raised in Barton County, Mo. where she attended country school. She married Loy "Tuffy" Holtsclaw March 8, 1930, in Lamar, Mo.

A former resident of Missouri, Nebraska, Stanhope and Monroe, she moved to Baxter in 1949 before recently moving to Newton. Mrs. Holtsclaw was employed as a cook for the Baxter School system, before retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ and Baxter Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a daughter, Rosalie McDermott of Reasnor; a son, Leslie "Bud" of Marshalltown; a sister, Martha Rankin of Bakersfield, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, a brother and three sisters. ~ The Newton Daily News, Wednesday, November 10, 1999
