Forrest "Johnny" Johnson

Forrest "Johnny" Johnson, 76, died of complications of a stroke, Sunday, August 20, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 25 at Reese Chapel in Newton with Rev. Mary Schneph, associate minister of First United Methodist Church in Newton, officiating. Private military graveside services were conducted Monday, August 28 by the American Legion Post No. 111 and the VFW Post No. 1655 of Newton in the veteran's section of the Newton Union Cemetery.

Memorials to the American Lung Association will be accepted.

The son of Henry Ray and Clara Olive Thompson Johnson, he was born October 9, 1923, in Newton. He was an honorary member of the Newton High School Class of 1943. He married Susanne Phipps February 16, 1980, in Kansas City, Missouri.

A lifelong resident of Newton, Mr. Johnson served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed by "Lefty" Sprague Mobil Gas Station in Newton for 30 years and later by Skiff Medical Center's maintenance department in Newton before retiring in February. Mr. Johnson was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Elks Club, all of Newton.

Survivors include four sons and three daughters -in-law, Rand and Doris of Baxter, Rick and Paula of Dike, Tracy of Newton and Tim and Vickie of Newton; three step-children, Dennis Phipps and Janice DePenning, both of Newton and Beverly Owens of Des Moines, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Alice and Walt Taylor, and Florence "Teddy" Wickett, all of Newton; two sisters-in-law, Meta Johnson of Cedar Falls, 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter in infancy, his wife, four brothers and a sister. Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, August 2000
