Max Earl Jontz, 78, of Newton died of cancer Saturday at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Evangelical Free Church in Baxter, of which he was a member. Burial will be private.

Mr. Jontz was born and lived most of his life in Newton before moving to Newton two years ago. He was a retired farmer and a member of Baxter Gun Club, Jasper County Gun Club and was founder of the Max Jontz Band.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, two sons, Dennis of Baxter and Darrell of Genoa, Ill.; a daughter, Diane Pennington of Port Byron, Ill.; a sister, Wanda Mackerman of Newton; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Boyd-Davis Funeral Home in Baxter where the family will be present from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. ~ DM Register or Newton Daily News, Monday, July 24, 2000
