Norman E. Mateer, 86, passed away on March 17, 2015 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Basilica of St. John. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.Private interment will be at McDivitt Grove Cemetery Columbarium in Urbandale.

Norman was born February 20, 1929 in Newton, Iowa the son of J. Carrol and Florence (Wheeler) Mateer. His family moved to Des Moines when he was 12. He graduated from North High School and attended A.I.B. College. He worked for Paxton Lumber Company and was a member of Teamsters, working for Brady and Lee Way Motor Freight. Following retirement he was a truck driving instructor at DMACC. Norman enjoyed gardening, volunteering at the Basilica and the St. Benedict Mission, making quilts, pot holders, rosaries, and whatever was on his "Honey Do List".

Norman is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Eric Mateer; daughters, Patricia (Jerry) Cairns, Marlene Fisher and Sue (Jack) Leatherman; 12 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and a sister Virginia Bell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Scott Mateer and Russell, Richard and Ronald Fisher and a great grandson, Christian Reede.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Basilica of St. John in memory of Norman. ~ The Des Moines Register Legacy, Des Moines, Iowa 23 Mar 2015.
