Born William Glen Godfrey on April 18th, 1925, in Brumley, MO, he was the son of Ray and Pearl (Robinette) Godfrey. At a young age, his family moved to the Marshalltown area, where he began schooling. He left school to help on the family farm and then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving our country proudly from September 21st, 1943 until May 8th, 1946. Glen served on the USS Ommaney Bay that was tragically sunk on January 4th, 1945. He was rescued by the USS New Mexico and served on that ship until his honorable discharge.

On July 5th, 1947, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Rosa Pauline Dobbs, in Newton, Iowa. They made their home in Marshalltown where he drove a beer truck from 1949 until 1963, then owned and operated Glen’s Tap on East Main Street. In 1972, he joined his son, Toby, in the operation of Godfrey Motors and remained active in the business until the fall of 2014.

Glen loved to spend time on his farm that he bought at the age of 65 and drive his Gator around the land. He enjoyed horse racing, fishing in the farm pond, old cars going for rides and treasured his family-especially the grand and great-grandkids.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Toby (Janice) Godfrey of Marshalltown, grandchildren- Paul Godfrey, Kendra Davis, Jason (Megan) Godfrey and David Godfrey all of Marshalltown and great-grandchildren-Kallie and Cole Davis and Jackson Godfrey all of Marshalltown.

In death, he rejoined his beloved Rosa who died in 2010, his parents, and sister, Marie Warnell who died at age 33. ~ The Des Moines Register Legacy, Des Moines, Iowa 23 Mar 2015.
