Mrs. Daniel Lanphier Passed to Her Reward Last Thursday
Born July 3, 1835
Died March 4, 1915
Mrs. Daniel Lanphier, one of the most dear1y loved women of Buena Vista Township, died at
the family home, three miles west of Killduff, last Thursday morning, her age being nearly
80. Mother Lanphier had suffered from rheumatic trouble for the past five years, followed by
two or three paralytic strokes in the past few months, from which she became practically
helpless, and was confined to her bed, her dear life ebbing away like the receding tide. She
remained conscious almost until the last heartbeat, and her sweet words of comfort and cheer to her husband and children will ever remain to them a sacred heritage.

Mrs. Lanphier’s maiden name was Anna McDonald; she was born in County Louth, Ireland, July 3, 1835. When she was 12 years of age she came to America with her parents and settled at Michigan City, Indiana, where she was married to Daniel Lanphier October 9, 1852. Two years later they moved to Jasper County, Iowa, which was but a thinly populated settlement on the western frontier, and where they have lived for over 60 years—most of the time on the old farm in Buena Vista Township.

In 1861 her husband enlisted as a soldier in Capt. Thos. H. Miller’s Company B, 13th, Iowa,
and during the long years of his absence in the service of his country, Mother Lanphier bravely kept up the farm home caring tenderly for the little children which Cod had given to them. Those were the days which tried the hearts of wives and mothers.

It was granted to Mr. and Mrs. Lanphier to live happily together for nearly 63 years. To them had been given eight children, four of whom survive the mother to bless and comfort the aged father in the greatest sorrow that has ever come into his life; they are James Lanphier of New Sharon; Edward and Lucian of Newton; and Sarah who remains at the parental home.

Besides these and the husband, she is survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was the last of her parents’ family of 10 children. Mother Lanphier had been a faithful and devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since 1856-59 years of willing work for her Master. The earnest sympathy of a host of friends is extended to the sorrowing husband and children.
Funeral services took place Saturday afternoon at her dear old Mt.Zion M.E. chapel and were
conducted by her pastor, Rev. Fowler. Internment was made in Mt. Zion Cemetery. There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors and many beautiful flowers silently told of their sympathy.
