William T. Haning Died Tuesday Evening, Nov. 23
William Tuttle Haning, 91, died at the home of his son, Oliver Haning in south Colfax Tuesday evening about 10:00, following a three months period of illness which had caused him to be bedfast. Mr. Haning had been suffering from asthma for many years and that coupled with the frailties of age caused his death.
He was born May 8, 1863, at Red Rock, Iowa, the son of Eliphaz and Jane Haning, and spent his early life in that area, except for one year when the family went to Kansas to homestead. Upon their return to Iowa, they again settled near Red Rock. On June 5, 1885, he was united in marriage to Nellie Roby at Grand Junction, Iowa, and in 1900 the family came to Jasper County, where they operated a farm near Prairie City. Mr. Haning later gave up farming and went into the barbering trade, working in shops at Swan and Dunreath, Iowa, before moving to Colfax where he assisted in the late C. M. Clark’s barber shop. In his later years, Mr. Haning took up carpentry and followed this line of work until his retirement several years ago. He had been a resident of Colfax for 51 years, the past 22 of which were spent in the home of his son and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Haning were the parents of fourteen children, seven of whom are left to mourn his passing. They include four sons, George of Sac City, Ia., William of Winnebago, Minn., Ted of Liberty, Mo., and Oliver of this city. Three daughters, Mrs. Nelle Richardson of Greeley, Colo., Mrs. Hazel Williams, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Thelma Bailey of Huxley, Iowa, also survive. Mrs. Haning preceded him in death several years ago. Nineteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren are left to cherish his memory.
Funeral services will be held at the Bumgardner Funeral Home Friday afternoon, November 26th at 2:00 with Rev. Frank Bobbitt, pastor of the Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Colfax cemetery beside his wife.
