LeRoy Winpegler Died of Heart Attack Friday
LeRoy (Lee) Winpegler, 82, died of a heart attack at his home in Mound Prairie Township Friday morning, January 1st, 1954. Mr. Winpegler had gone out doors to chop some wood, and was discovered about an hour later, having succumbed to the attack around 10:30.
Leroy Winpegler was born November 14, 1871 in Warren County, Ia., and died Jan. 1, 1954 at his farm home southeast of Colfax, having lived more than a decade above the “three score years and ten” Leroy was the youngest son of William and Mary Anne King Winpegler.
He received his education in the Warren County public schools. As a young man he farmed and spent a considerable amount of time in traveling throughout the middlewest. He came to Colfax in the early 90’s and was first employed here at the old Slaughter mine. While in this neighborhood he met Connie Blanford to whom he was married Nov. 28, 1896. To this couple were born two daughters, Faith Lorene and Mary Verda.
He was a member of the Methodist church.
From the time of his marriage Mr. Winpegler farmed east of Colfax and remained on this farm until his semi-retirement in 1934, after the death of his wife. Since that time he and his daughter Verda have made their home together.
While Mr. Winpegler made a life’s work of being a faithful husband and revered father he always had time to be a self-sacrificing good neighbor with a ready word of encouragement, a helping hand, and a good wish for a friend.
In his later years he has enjoyed his pastimes of gardening and extensive readings. His greatest enjoyment in the past few months has been the hours he was able to spend with his great grandson.
Surviving are his two daughters, Mrs. Marlin Moffitt and Verda Winpegler, also a grandson Robert Moffitt and a great grandson, Lonnie Eugene Moffitt.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. from the Bumgardner Funeral Home, with Rev. W. L. Hawn officiating.
Music was furnished by Mable Kaldenberg and Mrs. LaVerne Woods with Mrs. Frank B. Evans, pianist.
Pall bearers were Henry Van Ryswyk, William Buckroyd, Fred Rorabaugh, Ralph Hopkins, Walter Beals and Alfred Tobias.
Those in charge of the flowers were Marguerite Buckroyd and Ottilia Slatkoske.
Burial was in the Slaughter cemetery near Colfax.
