Pioneer Woman Dies Here Today

Mrs. Mary Dow Has Been Ill For Seven Years, Passed Away at Home Early This Morning

Mrs. Mary Dow, resident of Newton for the past 43 years died at her home here early this morning after seven years of illness suffering from complications which rendered her bedfast.

The last illness which resulted in Mrs. Dow’s death was shrinkage of the arteries. She was stricken with the last illness in February and she had been in a serious condition since then. Her three sons, Frank, John and Thomas, have been caring for her since that time. The latter two have been at home ever since her first illness bur Frank has only been here the past year.

Mrs. Dow was a native of Ireland coming to America when but a girl of 15 years. She lived after landing with her brother James Balmer, in Davenport and February 25, 1867 she was married to Albert Dow and to this union were born eight children sic of whom are living. The death of Mrs. Dow takes the last member of her family. She was 73 years old.

She leaves four sons, James G. of Altoona; Frank F., Arthur J. and Thomas at home, and one daughter, Mrs. Byrdie Westphal, of California. Her husband preceded her in death six years ago in August.

Funeral services will be held from the home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. paul E. Becker, pastor of the Christian church in charge of the services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery. ~ The Newton Daily News, July 26, 1923, page 1.
