Obituary of Mrs. Henry Runyan

Mary Charlotte Hiner was born in Bartholomew Co., Indiana, May 17, 1845, upon the death of her mother she was taken at the age of two years by the loving hand of her Grandmother Hiner who gave her the care and teachings of a Christian mother. When she was but eight years old her father departed this life and three years later she moved with her grandmother to Marion county, Iowa. On October 13, 1865, while making her home with an uncle she became the wife of Henry Runyan. They first made their home near Des Moines but moved from there to Boone county, Iowa, and later, in the year 1878, came to Jasper county near Colfax, where they have since lived until the death of the wife at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 3, 1916, after an illness of three weeks.

In 1898 Mrs. Runyan bacame a member of the Christian church at Colfax and has maintained her Christian stand until her death at the age of seventy years, nine months and sixteen days. Mrs. Runyan was the mother of nine children, four of whom with her husband are left to mourn her death, Mrs. Ida Barrett, of Greenland, Colorado; Mrs. Jessie Rogers, of Colfax, Iowa; Lanar and Charles Runyan of Goddard, Iowa; she leaves also thirteen grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors to mourn her death. As she was cared for from infancy by a loving grandmother so she in turn cared for two of her grandchildren who lost their mothers while small children.

Call not back the dear departed
Anchored safe where storms are o'er
On the border land we left her
Soon to meet and part no more.
