Betty Sietmann was born on July 1, 1923, at home in Laurel, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Ethel (Hill) Sietmann. She graduated with the Laurel High School’s class of 1941. Following her graduation, she attended the H.H. Hunt Business School in Marshalltown, driving from Laurel with three of her high school friends each day.

On May 6th, 1942, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Wendell Benskin, in Bethany, Missouri. The young couple moved to northern Jasper County, farmed, and shared 67 wonderful years together until his passing in January of 2009. They were blessed with three boys-Steven, Bryan, and Terry.

Betty worked side by side with her husband running the farm-anything from calving and farrowing, being mom and wife, running the household, but never milking a cow!

Betty was a historian at heart and enjoyed the adventure of reading. She blessed her family with her own retainage of her history by writing down her daily events in her diary since the time she was first married. Her most sincere pride came from her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Steven (Ingrida) Benskin of Newton, IA, Bryan (Jan) Benskin of Coon Rapids, MN, and Terry (Kim) Benskin of Laurel, IA and her dear grandchildren: Angie (Dan) Hummel, Thad (Fabiana) Benskin, Chris (Lisa) Benskin, and Carl Benskin, as well as her great-grandchildren: Devon, Blake, and Taylor Hummel, and Nikolas and Thomas Benskin.

She is also survived by her sisters: Beverly(Arthur) DeWitt and Joyce (David) Paul as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and her extended family at Bickford.

In death, Betty rejoined her parents, her husband, her sister-in-law Berniece McElree, great-grandson Wesley Benskin, a half-sister Fern Atkinson, and her brother, Richard Sietmann who preceded her to heaven a mere 14 hours prior to her death. ~ The Des Moines Register Legacy, Des Moines, Iowa 5 Jan 2015.
