Mrs. A. A. Steenhoek Dies at Prairie City
Well-Known Resident Dies Today at Home; Funeral Is Thursday
PRAIRIE CITY (Special) – Mrs. A. A. Steenhoek, 81, resident of the Prairie City area for more than 40 years, died early this morning at her home following a lingering illness.
Mrs. Steenhoek was the mother of Dick Steenhoek, Newton, the treasurer of Jasper county.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Christian Reformed church in Prairie City with burial in Waveland cemetery.
Mrs. Steenhoek was born Joahanna Van Ryswyk at Pella on March 3, 1871, and received her education in the Pella area. On March 16, 1892, she was married at Pella to Arie A. Steenhoek.
The couple farmed near Pella for several years, and in 1910 moved to the Prairie City area and farmed one mile east of Prairie City until 1924 when they moved into town and lived here ever since.
A member of the Christian Reformed church, Mrs. Steenhoek also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of The Daily News Three-Quarter Century club.
Survivors are her husband; five sons, Dick of Newton, Guy and Peter of Prairie City, Henry of Monroe, William of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Mrs. Jennie Schuttinga of Monroe; 21 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Steenhoek was preceded in death by five daughters and one son. Also surviving is one brother, Tice Van Ryswyk of Pleasantville, and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Van Derhuvlin of Hanford, Cal. Nine brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
