Accident Causes Death of 19-Year Old Colfax Youth
Robert Cross Succumbs to Injuries This Morning; Was Hurt Wednesday
Colfax, March 27 – Special to The Daily News – Robert Cross, 19, died at the Colfax Sanitarium at 8:15 o’clock, this morning as the result of injuries sustained Wednesday evening when the motorcycle on which he was riding was struck from the rear by an automobile, reported to have been driven by a Percy farmer named Cowman, who is said to have reported the accident after it occurred.
No funeral services have been arranged as yet.
Graduated in 1930
Robert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cross of Colfax, and is survived by his parents, a sister, Fern, and a brother, Delbert. He was graduated from the Colfax High school in the class of 1930 last June. He was born and raised in Colfax.
The accident, which resulted in the boy’s death, took place on the road between Colfax and Prairie City. Mr. Cowman is said to have reported that he was blinded by the lights of an oncoming machine and failed to see the motorcycle ahead of him until it was too late to avoid the crash.
Cross suffered a broken leg in the accident, when the wheels of the car passed over his body, as well as cuts and bruises. His leg was broken to two places and it is believed that he also received internal injuries which resulted in his death.
A Mr. Main, who was riding with Cross on the motorcycle at the time of the accident, suffered minor leg and head injuries. He is able to be up and is recovering satisfactorily.
