Newton Resident Dies Yesterday
Funeral Services for Mrs. L. O. Greenleaf Will be Held Tomorrow Afternoon.Mrs. L. A. Greenlief, a well known resident of Newton for the last 30 years, died yesterday morning at 11:30 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Clymer, near Metz, after an illness from pneumonia and influenza since last Wednesday.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Congregational church in charge of Dr. G. C. Williams. Burial will be made in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Hattie Chapman, daughter of J. O. and Mary Woodruff Chapman, natives of Ohio, was born Feb. 6, 1848, in Richland, Logan county, O. Her father followed the occupation of farming and owned a general store in Marysville and Richland, O., before coming to Jasper county in 1865 when Mrs. Greenlief was 17 years of age. The family settled on a farm in Mound Prairie township.
After her marriage to L.A. Greenlief on May 1, 1866, she and her husband lived on an 80 acre farm near her father’s, to which they added from time to time until they owned one of the largest tracts of land in the county.
About 30 years ago Mr. Greenlief who was also a stock raiser, retired and they moved to Newton where Mrs. Greenlief lived until last October, when she went to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Frank Clymer, who lives near Metz. Mr. Greenlief preceded her in death in 1919.
Mrs. Greenlief was an active member of the Congregational church and of the W.R. C. At the time of her death she was 79 years old. Mr. Greenlief was one of the veteran heroes of the civil war.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Frank Clymer, who lives near Metz, one brother, George Chapman of Newton; one half-sister, Mrs. Harry Galusha, near Phoenix, Ariz., who for the last five years had made her home with her, and one half-brother Charles Chapman, of Colorado.
She is also survived by five grandchildren, Mrs. Clarence Faidley, Mrs. Doyle Kinart, Mrs. Orvill Nearmyer, who lives near Metz, and John Leonard, and William Clymer, at home, eight great grandchildren, Gaylord, Leland, Junior and Wayne Faidley, viva and John Kinart and Lawrence and Loren Nearmyer, who are twins, all near Metz. ~ Newton Daily News, April 19, 1927, page 1
