Lela Chapman rites Friday; dies Wednesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Albert S. (Lela M.) Chapman, 86, of 1206 S. 8th Ave. E., a longtime resident of Jasper County, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Reese Funeral Chapel.

Dr. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church Elevator Fund have been established in Mrs. Chapman’s name. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or at the church.

She died Wednesday morning at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Survivors are a son, Donald Chapman of Apache Junction, Ariz; a daughter, Mrs. Luther (Jeanne) Rhodes of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sister, Mrs. Harp (Eva) Smith and Mrs. Hazel Wulf, both of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1966m a daughter in infancy, a son in infancy, two sisters and a brother.

Mrs. Chapman was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Four O Class, ODO Club and Jasper County Senior Citizens.

The daughter of John K. and Nellie Townsend Stewart, she was born June 17, 1894 in Jasper County.

She was married Aug. 16, 1916 at her parents’ home.

Mrs. Chapman also had resided in Nebraska for six years. ~ The Newton Daily News, February 26, 1981, page 6.
