R. Brown Dies Today
Robert Boyd Brown, 79-year-old retired farmer and carpenter, died at the Skiff Memorial hospital this morning at 4:55 o’clock where he had been a patient since June 4 when he became critically ill following a stroke.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Murdoch Funeral home by the Rev. George DeF. Fisher. Interment will follow in the Newton Union cemetery.
Mr. Brown was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, on March 29, 1862, the son of William and Jane Brown. The family came to the United States when he was but 3 years old and settled in West Virginia. In 1868, they came to Iowa and Jasper county, and in 1881 they settled on a farm 1 ˝ miles southwest of Newton.
He never married and spent his life in working on the farm with his father. After the death of the latter about 30 years ago he moved to Newton to make his home with his sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. David McAllister, who preceded him in death recently.
He was a former member of the Pythian lodge and belonged to the Three Quarter Century club of the Newton Daily News and Jasper County Record.
Surviving are a brother, Matt Brown of Newton and three sisters, Mrs. Vern French of Newton, Mrs. David Johnston of Winterset and Mrs. Mary Shields of Des Moines. Nieces and nephews living in Newton are Mrs. Inez Dotson, Allan McAllister and Vernon Brown.
