Dorothy Jean Castonguay, 88, died Saturday evening, Oct. 18, 2014, at Park Centre Health Center in Newton.
A funeral mass for Dorothy will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 24 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, Father William Reynolds and Deacon Dan Goetz officiating. A visitation with the family will be at the church one hour prior to the services. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorials may be designated in Dorothy’s name to: Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Park Centre Health Center. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
Dorothy, the daughter of George Howard and Ella (Kee) Mack, was born Jan. 8, 1926, on a farm near Marion. She was a graduate of the Marion High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She was employed by Bupane Gas Company in Cedar Rapids, where she met Gerald “Jerry” Castonguay.
On June 21, 1947, Dorothy and Jerry were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. They had five children, Jeryl, Jenifer, Joyce, Jeffrey and Joanna. A longtime resident of the Newton area, she devoted her life to her family and friends, and was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed painting, handwork, playing bridge, volunteer work in her church and community, and above all else being with family.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 67 years, Jerry; four daughters, Jeryl (Jerry) Laffoon, Jenifer (John) Parsons, Joyce Castonguay and Joanna (Tom) Wagner; a son Jeffrey (Kim) Castonguay; 11 grandchildren, Amy (Jason) Liechti, Jacob Parsons, Emily Laffoon, Matt (Andrea) Haynes, Michele Haynes, Tenille Castonguay, Nicole Castonguay, Amber (Aaron) Eggerss, Jack, Ben and Sophie Wagner; eight great-grandchildren; and her many good friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Bill; and her grandson Bryan Laffoon.
