Obituary of Peter Pentico
Peter Pentico was a native of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, and died at his home in Mound Prairie township on Tuesday of last week, aged 75 years. For 51 years he was a citizen of Iowa, locating first in Scott county, where, on April 9, 1867, he was united in marriage with Caroline Cline who survives him, and the same year they came to make their home in Jasper county, where they had lived ever since. Of the five children born to them, four are living.

For sixty years he was a member of the U. B. church, and the devoutness of this faith is attested by the fact that he never closed his eyes in sleep at night until after remembering his Heavenly Father in prayer. He was among the first to respond to his country’s call in time of the rebellion, in September, 1861, enlisting in Company D, 11th Iowa, Infantry, (Capt. A. E. Shrope, and Col. A. M. Hare) being mustered in November 1, 1861, at Davenport, and served in the famous Iowa Brigade, in McClernard’s Division 17th Army Corps. He participated in the following battles: Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862; the siege of Corinth, April 30 to May 30, 1862; battle of Corinth, October 3 and 4, 1863; battle of Iuka, September 9, 1862; battle of Black River Bridge, May 17, 1863; the siege of Vicksburg, May 18 to July 4, 1863; and the battle of Jackson, Mississippi, May 14, 1863. He was taken to hospital in Vicksburg July 5, 1863, to be treated for rupture sustained in line of duty, and finally rejoining his regiment April 14 on the march from the campaign of the Carolinas, he participated in the grand review of May 24, 1865, at Washington, D.C., going thence to Evansville, Indiana, where he was mustered out in July 1865. He was a faithful soldier and good, useful citizen. The funeral service was from the home last Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. J. A. Macy, of Des Moines, and Comrade Silas Poling. The interment was at the Rorabaugh cemetery.
