Howard W. Akins

Former Baxter resident, Howard W. Akins, 86, of Hastings, Minn. died Sept. 13, 2014, at the Regina Senior Living Facility in Hastings, Minn.

Howard was born May 5, 1928, in Mingo to Chauncey and Myrna (Harter) Akins and was a graduate of Mingo High School. He married Margaret Rosa on Aug. 14, 1949, at the First Baptist Church in Chariton, and farmed early in his working life. Howard and his brother Dewey Akins, owned Akins Brothers in Baxter, until 1973. Howard and Margaret then moved to Centerville, and finally to Hastings, Minn., in 1986. Howard was a member of both the Masons and the Eastern Star in Hastings.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Dewey; and sister Norma Jean Schmidt. Howard is survived by his wife, Margaret; children, James (Terri) Akins of Pleasant Hill, Donald (Donna) Akins of Baxter, Bruce (Sherry) Akins of Hastings, Minn., Jane Akins of Waterford, Conn., and Julia Akins of Eden Prairie, Minn.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; sister Verna Scott of Beaufort, S.C.; also nieces; nephews; and many friends.

A funeral service took place Sept. 20 in Hastings. There will be a visitation with family present from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Baxter Community Center. A private internment will be at Restland Cemetery in Baxter following the visitation.
