Gladys Marie Jenkins, 76, of Newton died Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at her home.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. On Monday, May 19, there will be a public Ladies of the Moose service at 5 p.m., followed by a visitation until 8 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials to Skiff Hospice or the Donor’s Choice may be left at the funeral home.
Gladys, the daughter of Roy and Blanche (Hart) Bland, was born on Oct. 24, 1937, in rural Exline. She grew up in Exline and graduated from Cincinnati High School in 1956. On June 14, 1957, she was united in marriage with James Ervin at the Exline Methodist Church. They moved to Newton in 1959. Gladys worked at the Vernon Company for 37 years, retiring from the catalog room. After retirement she worked at Walmart.
Following James’ death in 1987, she was united in marriage with Bill Jenkins on Feb. 15, 2009, in Newton. Gladys was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, the Women of the Moose and the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries. She enjoyed quilting at the Moose of Wednesdays and had enjoyed traveling and camping. Gladys loved spending time with her family and going to all of their activities. She was also known for hosting family holiday parties and decorating for each holiday.
Those left to honor Gladys’ memory are her husband, John W. “Bill” Jenkins of Newton; children, Cheryl (Mike) Haldeman and Randy (Mary) Ervin, both of Newton; her step-children, Bill (Janice) Jenkins, Dan (Tricia) Jenkins, Doug Jenkins and Brenda (Bryan) Lamb, all of Newton; 12 grandchildren, Tara (Joe) Rechtfertig and Jeff Haldeman; Chelsea (Brandon) Dunkerson, Jacob Ervin and Miranda Ervin; Rachel (Rich) Austin and Stephanie (Adrian) Good; Courtney, Alex and Shane Jenkins, and their mother Shannon Dannen; and Devin and Clay Lamb; her 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Velma Milford of Iowa City; brother, Roy Bland Jr. of Centerville; many nieces and nephews; and her dog, Shadow. She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, James Ervin. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.
