D. W. "Bill" Boss, the son of Frank William and Irene L. (Egger) Boss, was born on October 15, 1924 in Ryan, Iowa. He was a graduate of Coggon High School with the Class of 1942 in Coggon, Iowa. Bill served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps during WW II. He served in the Pacific from September 1944-April 1946, participated in the occupation of China from September 1945-April 1946.
On September 1, 1949, Bill was united in marriage with Velda I. Hamblin in the Presbyterian Church in Coggon. This union was blessed with five children, Virgil, Glenda, Paula, Janell, and Lynette. Bill owned Boss Agency Life Insurance in Hudson, Iowa for many years until he retired. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grinnell, Poweshiek Lodge No. 174 A.F. & A.M., Waterloo High Twelve, Life Member of VFW Post 4596, and the American Legion. Bill loved being with his family and telling others about his family. He collected antique Chinese art and he enjoyed fishing, especially at his daughter's resort on the Canadian border. He was a legendary storyteller and a loving and devoted husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend.
Bill died on Monday, October 22, 2012, at his home in Grinnell at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter, Janell Boss in infancy.
Those left to honor Bill's memory are his wife of 63 years, Velda of Grinnell; four children, Virgil (Laurie) Boss of Cascade, Idaho, Glenda (Keith) Bernhardt of North Fork, Idaho, Paula Schlicht (fiancé, Paul Herminath) both of New London, Wisconsin, and Lynette (Robert) Lender of Brooklyn; nine grandchildren, Laura Boss and Deanna DeMarino, Aaron (Jocelyn) Boss, Allison (Dan) Haskill, Ian (Randi) Bernhardt, Jared Schlicht, Eric Sylvester, Rob (Crystal Lender, Danielle (Kenneth) Anderson, and Jamie Lender; his thirteen great-grandchildren, sister, Garnet (Warren) Harbaugh of Manchester; and Bill’s caretaker, Phillip Lender.
Memorials to Grinnell Hospice or to the First Presbyterian Church may be left at the church on the morning of the service. Memorials may also be mailed to the Boss Family at 822 Lincoln Dr., Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
Visitation Service: Seeland Park Social Center, 2021 4th Ave., in Grinnell. A public masonic service will follow at 7 p.m., conducted by the Poweshiek Lodge No. 174 A.F. & A.M, Friday, October 26th, 2012; 6:00pm
Memorial Service: the First Presbyterian Church, 1025 5th Ave., in Grinnell. Saturday, October 27th, 2012, 5:00pm to 6:00pm
