Richard “Rick” Odem, 54, of Newton died on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at the funeral home. Memorials in Rick’s name may be left at the funeral home.
Those left to honor Rick’s memory are his wife, Lori Odem of Newton; children, Laurie Odem of Cranston, RI, Thomas Odem of Baxter, and Bryan Odem of Newton; his 11 grandchildren, Stone, Riley, Jasmine, Payden, Emma, Addisyn, Ricky, Chasitie, Leroy, Aubrie, and Rebekah; mom, Jean Odem of Lincoln, Neb.; his siblings, Ed (Marlene) Odem of League City, Texas, Robert Odem of Oakdale, Sheryl Haas of Eagle Grove, Neb., Dennis (Dareena) Odem of Omaha, Neb., Joe Odem of Lincoln, NE, Larry (Rita) Odem of Hampton, and Kim Odem of Lincoln, Neb.; two brothers-in-law, Terry Jeter of Des Moines and Tim Schuler of Kellogg; and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Vern Odem; two sisters, Theresa Jeter and Pam Schuler; and a brother-in-law, Kevin Haas.

Rick, the son of Vern and Jean (Shepard) Odem, was born on December 30, 1957 in Lafayette, France. He lived many places growing up including multiple towns in Northern Iowa. Rick served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was united in marriage with Lori Kroeger on July 27, 1976 in Toledo. After returning from the military he worked at a hog confinement plant and then later at a dairy farm. Rick and Lori moved to Newton in 1994. Most recently he had been an asphalt truck driver for Mannatt.
