Charles H. Hamilton
Lynnville, Iowa
Oct 6, 1920 - Aug 12, 2007

Charles Howard Hamilton, the son of Jesse A. and Nola (Hasty) Hamilton, was born on October 6, 1920 in Delta, Iowa. He passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2007, at the age of 87, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell, Iowa.

Charles attended school in Delta and Barnes City, graduating from Barnes City High School in 1938. He played baseball and basketball during high school in addition to helping his dad on the farm.

In June of 1942, Charles was inducted into the Medical Battalion of the 4th Infantry division of the United States Army. Beginning with the D-Day invasion of Normandy at Utah Beach on June 6, 1944, Charles cared for wounded soldiers at the battles of the European Warfront through France, Luxemburg, Belgium, and Germany. He was discharged on October 5, 1945 as a Staff Sergeant and awarded the Bronze Star.

On September 5, 1945, Charles and Hazel M. Brouwer were united in marriage at the Montezuma Methodist Church. The Hamilton's farmed during their early years of marriage. They later made their home in Barnes City, where Charles worked for the Barnes City post office for 25 years, retiring in 1986 as Postmaster. They celebrated their 61st anniversary in 2006.

Charles became a born again Christian in the early 1940’s and spent most of his life doing God’s work. In the fall of 1986, Charles and Hazel began serving as Missionary helpers for 3 years in Roma, Texas and later for 17 years at the Melody Lane Christian Renewal Center in Mission, Texas. Some of their work was across the border in Mexico. Charles felt the 20 years spent in Texas where some of the most rewarding of his life. While living in Barnes City, Charles served on the Barnes City Cemetery board, was a Sunday School Superintendent, elder, usher, Gideon, Boy Scout leader, Pleasant Homes President, and American Legion Post Chaplain. In Texas, Charles taught Sunday school and organized the food bank at the church they attended. He was currently a member of the Lynnville Friends Church.

Charles also enjoyed gardening, caring for his goats, wood working, and going on camping trips with his children. He was also an avid Bible reader.

In May of 2006, Charles and Hazel moved to Lynnville, Iowa to be closer to their family. The family gives God the glory for impressing this move onto their hearts as it has been a blessing to have Charles and Hazel close during Charles’s illness.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis, who was pronounced missing in action on January 5, 1968 in the Vietnam War; and 3 sisters, Dorotha Tinsley, Helen Spain, and Anna Deecore. Those left to honor Charles’s memory are his wife, Hazel of Lynnville; son, Rodney (and Linda) Hamilton of Barnes City and their children, Bradley (and Dawn) Hamilton and their family, Austin and Breanna of Malcom, Iowa, Bryan (and Ami) Hamilton and their family, Katelyn and Nathan of Centerville, Iowa, and Lisa (Matt) Facile and their family, Megan and Jacob of Newton, Iowa; his daughter, Joyce (and Dwight) Beyer of Lynnville and their children, Chantelle (and Bob) Beiner and their family, Dylann and Derek of Newton, Emily (and Matt) VerMeer of Hannibal, Missouri, and Mallory Beyer, a college student at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma; his daughter, Sara (and Adrian) Hoover of Walford, Iowa; sister, Shirley (and Willard) Freese of Norwalk, Iowa; his brother, Gilbert (and Eleanor) Hamilton of Omaha, Nebraska; sister, Doris Freeborn of Newton; and many nieces, nephews, and friends, both in Iowa and Texas.
