Funeral Service for Ray Schmitt Monday

Sudden Death of 11 Yr. Old Son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Schmitt Shock to Community

The unexpected death of Ray Edward Schmitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Schmitt, of Washington Township, came as a shock not only to his immediate family but to that entire community. His illness was of short duration, being sick but about three weeks when he passed away Saturday, May 7th.

The funeral services were conducted from the home on Monday afternoon, with Rev. L. C. McDonald, pastor of the Colfax Methodist Church in charge. Interment was made at the Highland Cemetery in Colfax.

Music for the services was two selections of the phonograph which Ray was especially fond of and which he had enjoyed during his last illness, “In the Garden” and “Whispering Hope.”

Ray Edward Schmitt, second son of Lyle and Audrey Schmitt, was born near Colfax, Iowa, April 25th, 1921, and passed away May 7, 1932, at the age of 11 years and 12 days.

Ray was a regular member of the Washington Center Sunday School and was always ready to do whatever he could to help.

(Part of obit is missing) school and was popular with his playmates and teacher.

There is not much to be said in the way of history of a life so short and we wonder sometimes why these (part of obit missing) should be taken from their family and loved ones but we have the promise that “Their angels do always behold the face of their Father in Heaven.”

Ray was a good boy in his home and school and was a patient sufferer during his last sickness of a little more than three weeks. Being taken early in life, he will miss much of the joy of living, but he will miss much of life’s sorrows and trouble too.

He leaves to mourn his going, his father and mother, three brothers, his grandparents, several uncles, aunts and cousins, and many friends. One brother, Max, preceded him to his heavenly home. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Thurs 12 May 1932.
