Mrs. Alexander Rose Old Resident of Mingo Died
Mrs. Sophia Knapp Rose died Feb. 6, 1914, at the home of her son, Frank Rose, in Mingo and the funeral was held Sunday, Feb. 8th.
Sophia Knapp was born at Alexander Bay, N.Y., Jan. 17, 1832. She had therefore attained the ripe old age of 82 years and 20 days.
She was married to Alexander Rose in May 1852 and in 1855 they moved to Michigan and in 1876 they came to Jasper county where she remained until her death.
Mr. Rose died in Mingo in April 1901.
To this union eight children were born, four boys and four girls. One girl had preceded her to the better land. The others were with her until the end came: George Rose of Colfax, James of Santiago, Zada Wilder of Grinnell, Frank of Mingo, William of Rockwell City, Lydia Daft of Colfax and Ella Spencer of Gowrie, Iowa. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Zera and William Knapp of Aurora, Iowa, and Sarah Derndall, Fulton, N.Y., and Betsey Nooksuch, of Washington.
Mrs. Rose was a woman of strong character and one to whom her children and family always were of first consideration. No sacrifice was too great for her to make for her children. She had been a very active woman and knew the hardships of life in the first half of the past century and having been active feared in her declining years that she would be in the way or a bother to someone, but her children loved her and gladly did everything they could for her and made her later years happy ones.
Deputy marshal, Alexander Rose of this city was a nephew of the deceased and attended the funeral Sunday.
