BAXTER, IA – Funeral services for Ed Jontz who passed away Sunday night, Nov. 9, was held at the Community Congregational church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. David E. Arnold in charge of the services.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Cecil Weeks and Mrs. Arthur Dodd with Mrs. David E. Arnold, organist. Songs used were, “The Old Rugged Cross,” “City Four Square” and “Going Down the Valley One by One.”
Those serving as pallbearers were O. E. Cunningham, A. O. Wilson, Pete Monaghan, Calvin Noah, sr., John Schroyer and Herman Saak. Floral arrangements by Mrs. John Boyd, Mrs. Wayne Miller and Mrs. M. C. Burnham. Interment was at Newton Union cemetery.
George Edwin Jontz, son of Jacob and Mary Smith Jontz was born May 20, 1861 at Princeton, Ill., and departed this life at his home in Baxter Nov. 9, 1941 at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 19 days.
At the age of six years he moved with his parents to Malcom, Ia., where they resided for three years before moving in 1870 to the home place east of Baxter where Charles Jontz now lives. He spent three years working at Boone, Ia., prior to his marriage to Sarah Sanderson, Feb. 7, 1886. His first wife passed away Jan. 16, 1898.
He was united in marriage Aug. 8, 1899 to Minnie Wheatcraft and they lived on his farm east of Baxter until Feb. 9, 1920. Since that time he has lived in Baxter.
Mr. Jontz was preceded in death by his father and mother and three brothers, Will in 1930, Charles in 1935 and Adam in 1940. He is survived by his wife, three brothers and three sisters.
They are I. J. Jontz of Colfax, Lon of Baxter and C. A. of Newton, Mrs. Sadie Smith of Norwalk, Mrs. Retta Bair of Newton and Mrs. Ora Pyle of Melbourne.
He also leaves a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Mr. Jontz has been a member of the Woodman lodge for the past 45 years.
He was a farmer and business man and was active in all the affairs of life as long as health would permit.
All through the past eight years he has suffered a great deal.
