E. Byron Smith

E. Byron Smith, 86, of Heritage Manor in Newton, died of complications of pneumonia, Friday, Feb. 18, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Willis Grant, pastor of Wittemberg Church of rural Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Wittemberg Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the downtown funeral home where family will be present from noon to 1 p.m. Memorials to the Wittemberg Church, Jasper County Historical Society or Newton Public Library will be accepted.

The son of C. Everett and Myrtle Wormley Smith, he was born Dec. 14, 1913, in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1931 and attended Iowa State College for two years.

A lifelong resident of Newton, Mr. Smith lived in rural Newton where he worked as a farmer and was employed by the Maytag Cheese Plant. He was a member of the Wittemberg Church, Wittemberg Grange and Jasper County Farm Bureau.

Survivors include two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eleanor Smith Herr of Iowa City and Myra Jean Smith and Leo Persselin of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
