Alice Van Weldon Died March 31st in Tipton, Oklahoma

Was resident of Colfax Several Years Before Going South

Word was received here last week by friends telling of the death of Miss Alice Van Weldon at her home in Tipton, Oklahoma. Miss Van Weldon was a resident of Colfax for a number of years and at one time was in charge of the Rest Home.

The following report of her passing, taken from the Tipton, Okla., Tribune will be of interest to her many friends here:

“After long months of suffering from an incurable malady, Miss Alice van Weldon passed away at her home northeast of Tipton Wednesday morning at six o’clock. Though her death was not unexpected, yet the community bowed in sorrow in the loss of one whom they had loved and respected.

Miss Van Weldon was born in Netherlands in 1879. She came to America with her parents at the age of 13 and lived in Iowa later coming to Tipton to make her home with her mother, the late Mrs. Van Weldon and her sister, Mrs. Dena Roos. She was converted at the age of 22 and joined the Methodist Church of which she has been an active member until her illness when she became inactive.

She leaves to mourn her loss the following relatives. One brother, Henry Van Weldon of California, and four sisters, Mrs. Leonard Ton of Holland, Mrs. Maggie DeKonning of Newton, Iowa, Mrs. Lizzie Sadoris of Aleda, Illinois and Mrs. Dena Roos of this community.

A quiet unassuming character was Miss Van Weldon who lived for her loved ones and friends. She will be greatly missed. She loved her home here as well as the country of her birth. She took active part in the community affairs during her days of health and was untiring in her efforts to help those who needed assistance.

Funeral services were held at two thirty Thursday afternoon from the Methodist Church in Tipton with Reverend Brogan of Altus officiating, assisted by Rev. J. D. Stout of Headrick and Willow Point and Rev. Walter Gilliam. The Services were beautiful in keeping with the life of the deceased.

Her favorite scriptures were read and her favorite songs were sung softly by a large choir. Many friends and relatives from all over this part of the country came to pay their last respects to this Godly woman. The chancel of the church was covered with flowers whose mute testimony bespoke the love which her friends held for her.

As a special request Mrs. Horace Harrell sang “In the Garden.”

Interment was made in the Tipton Cemetery. ~ The Colfax (IA) Tribune, Thurs 8 April 1937.
