Athel E. Wilson, 73, of 2301 S. 5th Ave. E., a resident of Newton since January, 1978, died Saturday evening, June 1, at the Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

Dr. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. today, June 3. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Gertrude; three sons, Donald of Rochester, Minn., Dale of Unionville, Va., and Doyle of Baton Rouge, La.; a step-daughter, Mrs. David (Norma) Bappe of Decorah; and three grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, George Wilson of Pacifica, Calif., and Dean Wilson of Wichita, Kan., and five sisters, Opal Kinder of Wichita, Kan., Pearl Wallis of Anderson, Mo., Mrs. Maynard (Ruby) Chaney of Anderson, Mo., Mrs. John (Lena) Tye of Moreno, Calif., and Mrs. Clarence (Reatha) Johnson of Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Harold and Bill Joe, as well as two in infancy.

Mr. Wilson served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Wilson was a retired employee of Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corp.

The son of Alec Elmer and Flora Belle Divine Wilson, he was born Jan. 12, 1912 in Anderson, Mo., and attended Anderson schools.

He was married to Gertrude Marie Wallace Feb. 26, 1949 in Des Moines. ~ Newspaper unnamed, possibly The Des Moines Register or The Newton (IA) Daily News Mon 3 June 1985
