Delmer Vander Pol, 78

On June 24, 1921 Delmer Vander Pol was born near Lynnville. He was the first of two children that were born to Guy and Maggie Eysink Vander Pol. Delmer received his education at the junction countries grade school and finished his formal education at the Lynnville grade school.

On September 29, 1943, he and Vivian Almetta Shutts were united in marriage at St. Andrew' s Lutheran Church near Sully. To this union two daughters were born: Marilyn Mae and Peggy Lee. Delmer and Vivian continued to live all their married live on the farm where he was born. Delmer farmed there all his working life while at the same time he operated other business ventures. He was a Massey Ferguson dealer in the Lynnville area for 50 years and for 40 years did farm tiling. Since 1950, he had operated Van’s Machine Shop.

On Sunday, January 16, 2000 he suffered a stroke and was admitted to the Pella Regional Health Center. He passed away there early Thursday morning Jan. 20, at the age of 78 years, six months, and 26 days.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Vivian; their two daughters and their families which includes four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They are Marilyn and Robert Van Soelen of Killduff and their two children: Gregory and Kathy Van Soelen and their three children: Madeline, Keaton, and Ava of Sioux Center; Becky and Kevin Roose of Urbandale; Peggy Huyser of Sully and her two children; Chad and Valerie Huyser of Pella; and Suzanne Huyser of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Delmer also leaves a sister-in-law, Maxine Shutts of Montezuma. He was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Christian Van Soelen on March 18, 1996; his father Guy who died September 20, 1960 and his mother, Maggie who died June 12, 1968; his only sister Dorothy Vander Pol, who died October 16, 1983; and his brother-in-law, Wayne Shutts who died April 11, 1999.

Graveside services were held Monday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Sully. Rev. Alan R. Thoreson, officiated. Casket bearers were Bob Van Soelen, Chad Huyser, Gregory Van Soelen, Kevin Roose, Bryce Vander Wilt, and Maury Vander Wilt. For those desiring, memorials may be designated for the Lynnville Historical Society. ~ Newspaper not named but possibly The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa or The Newton (IA) Daily News.
