Edward Lester, 71, Dies On Thursday; Rites Saturday
Edward B. Lester, 71, of 204 N. 9th Ave. W., a resident of Newton for 48 years, died Thursday morning at Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.
The Rev. Stan Wierson, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Friday.
Memorial contributions to the Des Moines Ostomy Chapter will be accepted. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors are his wife, Lela; a son and daughter-in-law, Leon and June Lester of Stigler, Okla.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Paul (Judy) Davis of Knoxville; a grandson, Edward J. Lester of Des Moines; a great-grandson; three great-granddaughters; and his mother; Mrs. Elizabeth Lester of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his father, a daughter, Judith; a grandson; a sister, Beth Griggs, and a brother Walter.
Mr. Lester was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a life member of Local 997, United Auto Workers (UAW) and a member of the Des Moines Ostomy Chapter.
Mr. Lester, a court bailiff for nine years, was employed by the Maytag Co. for 38 ½ years and was a school teacher for three years.
The son of David and Elizabeth Williams Lester, he was born July 21, 1906, at Montezuma, attended Barnes City High School and William Penn College in Oskaloosa.
He was married to Lela Morrow Jan 26, 1924 at Barnes City. ~ The Newton (Iowa) Daily News, Friday, January 6, 1978
