Stacy J. Backus, 68, of 722 E. 3rd St. S., Newton, who served 33 years with the Newton fire Department, including 13 years as fire chief, died of cancer Friday morning, November 15, at Skiff Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 18, at the United Congregational Church of Christ in Newton, with the Rev. David Raymond, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.

A memorial fund in Mr. Backus' name has been established.

Reese Funeral Home in Newton handled arrangements.

Born June 24, 1928, in Colfax, he was the son of Carl Henry, Sr. and Margaret Cattin Backus. he graduated from Newton High School.

He married Marilyn Bergman May 25, 1953, at her parents' home in rural Newton.

A lifelong resident of Newton, he was a member of the Newton Fire Department from 1952 to 1985, serving as Newton fire chief from 1972 until he retired in 1985. He also served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948. He was a member of the Iowa Firemans Association, Retired Fire Chiefs and was a life member of the VFW.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ron and Rick of Newton; a daughter, Rhonda Faidley of Chanhassen, Minnesota; two sisters, Mary Backus of Newton and Louise Backus of Carson city, Nevada; and six grandchildren.
