Raymond "Ray" Russell Vaughn, Jr., 55, passed away suddenly on January 27, 2014 in Newton, IA. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, at Iles Brandt Chapel in Woodward, where a Masonic service will begin at 8 p.m. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service celebrating Ray's life is being planned at a later date with a burial at Woodward Cemetery in Woodward.

Ray was born March 15, 1958 in Jefferson, IA, the son of Marion Belle Small and Raymond "Pete" Vaughn of Woodward, Iowa. He was a beloved father and a treasured friend.

Ray attended Ogden Elementary School until the second grade, when the family moved to Woodward, and graduated from Woodward-Granger High School in 1976. While in school, Ray participated in Cub Scouts, baseball, football, and wrestling, placing in the heavyweight class for both his junior and senior year at the state tournament. He also played tuba in band and drums and bass guitar in jazz band.

Ray attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and served on the Marshalltown Police Force for two years while he furthered his education to become a computer programmer. He was most recently employed as an IT Architect by Nationwide Insurance in Des Moines, working there for over 15 years.

Ray was an active member of the Masonic Lodge. He continued to enjoy playing guitar into his adult years as well as riding his motorcycle. In his spare time he greatly enjoyed reading, playing with gadgets, and spending time with his family, fiancée and many friends.

Raymond is survived by his daughters, Erin (Joshua) Vaughn Murphy of Cedar Rapids, IA and Shannon (Daniel) Vaughn of Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, England; mother, Marion Vaughn of Woodward; sister, Ruth (Charlie) Owen of Guthrie Center, IA, brother, Eli (Kay) Vaughn of Afton, IA, and sister, Mary Vaughn of West Des Moines; fiancée, Cheryl Quinn of Newton, IA; nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Russell Vaughn, Sr.
