Mary E. McCombs, 67, of Melrose, formerly of Newton, died Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15,at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery with Chaplain Merle Smith officiating.
Visitation will be today, July 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be left to Hospice of Jasper County at the funeral home.
She was born on July 10, 1941, in Newton, the daughter of Edward and Wanda (Buckley) Cockerton. Mary grew up and lived in the Newton area. She attended Newton public schools through 10th grade and obtained her GED. On March 6, 1964, she was united in marriage to Dennis McCombs in Unionville, Mo. Following Dennis' retirement from Maytag, they moved to Melrose and had lived there ever since.
She worked in the dietary departments and managed the kitchens at Nelson Manor and later at Careage. She enjoyed reading, flower gardening, crocheting, the collecting of Dachsund-related items, her two dogs, Libby and Suzie, and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis of Melrose; two sons, Dennis McCombs of Danbury, Conn., and Joe McCombs of Newton; one daughter, Annette (Benny) Spears of Newton; six grandchildren, Kim, Tracy, Heather, Holly, Randy and Christopher; and two brothers, Robert (Hope) Cockerton and William (Connie) Cockerton, all of Newton. She was preceded by her parents; her son, Ronnie, in 1997; and her brother, David Cockerton
