Archie P. Hackney, 92, of Newton died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at Skiff Medical Center.

A visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory followed by burial at Newton Union Cemetery. In addition, the family will be having a celebration of Archie’s life in the spring. Memorials to the Newton Little League may be left at the funeral home.

Archie, the youngest of nine children born to Henry and Lila (Hempey) Hackney, was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Newton. In 1938, at the age of 16, Archie became part of Iowa history when he was invited to be a contestant in the first Golden Gloves event in Iowa. At the age of 19, he hitchhiked to Davenport to work for Rock Island Arsenal. In August of 1942, Archie received his draft notice for the U.S. Army. During his time in the service he was stationed in Bougainville, the largest Solomon Island, for 13 months working on a bomb disposal squad, later he went to Luzon, Philippines, working in ammunitions with the supply infantry, and then to a camp in Manila prior to returning to the States in December of 1945.

On Jan. 3, 1946, he was united in marriage with Margery Hallam in Davenport. He went back to work at the Rock Island Arsenal for a short time before moving back to Newton. In Newton he worked for Dunlap for 34˝ years and was the supervisor in the machine shop for approximately 30 of those years. Following Dunlap’s closing Archie then worked for a window factory for two years, retiring at the age of 62.

Archie’s favorite past time was coaching little league baseball. He also enjoyed going to the Jasper County and Iowa State Fairs, where he entered antique items that he had restored. He was a coin collector and liked to create items with wood and a whittling knife. Archie was a member of the Wittemberg Church in rural Newton.

Those left to honor Archie’s memory are his daughter, Vicki (Mark) Enright of Homer Glen, Ill.; granddaughter, Brianna Enright of Chicago, Ill.; sister, Mildred Hennon of Newton; his 10 nephews and one niece; and special friend, Ruth Pauls of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margery Hackney in 1996; and brothers and sisters, Clyde Hackney, Marie Durfey, Rex Hackney, Wilbur Hackney, Imogene Barker, Ula Baughter and Lois Owens. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.
