1921 - 2013 | Obituary

George L. Christen, 92, formerly of Independence, Missouri, died in Lake Jackson, Texas, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013. Services will be at 2 P.M. Sunday, Nov.10, at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel, 11924 E. 47th St., KCMO. Visitation will be at 1 P.M. prior to the service, with private burial at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The son of John and Matilda Christen, George was born in Amana, Iowa, on Feb. 2, 1921 and grew up in Newton, Iowa. In 1941 he married Joy I. Buckley. They moved to Kansas City and later to Independence where they resided until Joy's death in 2007. George moved to Lake Jackson in 2010.

Prior to and following his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, George worked at Armco (Sheffield) Steel in Kansas City; retiring after 40 years of service. After his retirement, George and Joy enjoyed many trips which took them to over 50 foreign countries. George was a faithful member of Children's Memorial Lutheran Church in Kansas City. George was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Joy Christen; brothers, Ray and Milton Christen, and sisters, Eleanor Peterson and Leona Loveland. He is survived by his son, Jim Christen and daughter- in-law, Janet of Lake Jackson, TX; three grandchildren, Michael Christen of Saudi Arabia, Brian Christen (Bevin) of Houston, TX, and Jennifer Christen of Austin, TX; four great-grandchildren, Camden Christen, Nicholas Glass and Brenna Christen, and Lucy Villarreal; brother, Duane Christen (Alphy) of Ft.
