May 2, 1937 - October 17, 2013

Verne Rethmeier, 76, formerly of Marshalltown, passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2013, in rural Eldora, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Zoar Cemetery Foundation, 8971 Hwy T12 North, Newton, Iowa, 50208 or Sunflower House 15440 W 65th Street Shawnee, Kansas, 66217 (A Child Abuse Prevention Center). Verne Victor Rethmeier was born on May 2, 1937, in Newton Iowa, along with his twin sister. He was the last of 12 children born to Fredrick and Rosa Marie (Tinnermeier) Rethmeier. When Verne was only three years old, his father passed away and he grew up under the care of his mother and older siblings. Verne attended country schools and later received his GED from Marshalltown Community College. On June 6, 1954, Verne was united in marriage to Dorma Lee Ingalls at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, in Nashua, Iowa; they were blessed with 5 children and raised their children in Marshalltown, Iowa. Dorma passed away in 1985 and Verne remarried Lucille Fullington and later divorced. Verne had worked at Dunham Bush Foundry, Gray Iron, and Swift Packing Plant in Marshalltown, and Nordyne in Missouri. He also drove a Semi for a time. Verne enjoyed fishing, was an avid motorcyclist, always enjoying his Harley Davidson as he and his wife Dorma traveled much of the United States on the Harley. He was also a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. He was fond of animals, and connected with his pets throughout his life.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Michelle (John) Herman of Paola, Kansas, Daniel Rethmeier of Eldora, Iowa and Cynthia Pilkington of Lincoln, Nebraska. Grandchildren: Rachel (Blake) Larsen of Olathe, Kansas, John (Siri) Herman of Valparaiso, Indiana, Emily Herman (fiancé, Rick Rinche) of Corpus Christi, Texas, Jennifer Shelton of Canton, Connecticut, Danielle Rethmeier (fiancé Steven Peterson) of Windsor Heights, Iowa, Ryan Pilkington (fiancé Kelli Rost) of Lincoln, Nebraska, Candice (James) Moran of Lee Summit, Missouri and Casey Rethmeier (partner Adam Keim) of Kirksville, Missouri. Great-grandchildren: Ty Rethmeier, Gianna Iaria, Olivia Larsen, Lillian Larsen, and Peyton Pilkington. Siblings: Florence Foster of Allerton, Iowa, Myrtle (Robert) Foster of Corydon, Iowa, Donald (Joyce) Rethmeier of Newton and Verna Ulery of Monroe, Iowa.

In death Verne rejoins his parents, Fredrick and Rosa, wife, Dorma, sons, Douglas and Kenneth, grandchildren, Megan Herman and Joseph Rethmeier, brothers: Ralph, Glen, Floyd, Robert, Morris, Darrell and sister, Violet Smith. ~ The Mitchell Family Funeral Home, Marshalltown, Iowa.
