Newton Man Drowns Monday In Farm Pond Near Kellogg
An 18 year-old Newton man drowned shortly before 7 p.m. Monday evening while trying to swim across a farm pond near Kellogg.
Raymond Sutton, 1400 E. 5th St. S. was pronounced dead by acting county medical examiner Dr. T. E. Jessen after his body was recovered from a pond on the John Balmer farm south of Kellogg.
Sutton and four companions had been seining for crayfish in the pond when they decided to move to the opposite side. One of the men walked around the pond while the other four attempted to swim across.
Part way across, Sutton, who was wearing blue jeans and boots, became caught in some moss and began to struggle. Efforts to rescue him were unsuccessful. His body was recovered approximately 90 minutes later after the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department and the Kellogg rescue squad was notified and conducted dragging operations.
Authorities said the five were on the Balmer property without the owner’s permission. The property is posted with no trespassing signs.
Sutton had recently enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was to have reported for duty Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Wallace Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Wallace Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Sutton of Newton; a brother, James of Newton; two sisters, Mrs. Pamela Owens and Jackie Sutton, both of Newton; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McDonald of Barbourville, Ky., and Ed Sutton of Newton. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Cleo Sutton.
The young man, who had just enlisted in the Army and was to report July 4, was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.
The son of Raymond E. and Anna Mae McDonald Sutton, he was born July 30, 1959 at Newton.
