MURPHYSBORO - Avis Ellen Cardwell, 84, passed away at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, in Murphysboro.
Avis was born Sept. 18, 1928, in Olney, a daughter to the late John B. and Sarah Ellen (Drone) Wathen.
Avis spent her early years in Gorham and moved to Murphysboro in 1941.
She was united in marriage to William E. "Shorty" Cardwell on Sept. 27, 1946, in Murphysboro. William preceded her in death Dec. 26, 1995.
Avis was a life-long member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro.
She was a retired certified court reporter for the First Judicial Circuit courts in Jackson County. She was a member of the D.A.R. and a volunteer for numerous organizations in the community of Murphysboro and St. Andrew Catholic Church.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro, with Father Gary Gummersheimer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Andrew Cemetery in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro.
Memorials are encouraged and may be made to St. Andrew Catholic Church or to St. Andrews School.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Steve Glodo and Gaye and Jay Youngman all of Murphysboro; four grandchildren, Sarah (Cody) Muhs of Newton, Iowa, Josh (Angie) Glodo of Festus, Mo., Beth (Matt) Brooks of Murphysboro, and Matt (Jessica) Youngman of Washburn; eight great-grandchildren, Danielle and Madison Glodo, Owen and Cameron Muhs, Logan and Tait Youngman, Cade and Cash Brooks; and one great-great granddaughter, Abmerlynn Glodo. Avis is also survived by her life-long friend, Phyllis Borgsmiller of Murphysboro.
